Pomodoro Timer Deep Dive
ADHD-optimised timer settings, break patterns, and productivity tracking.
Overview
The Pomodoro Timer helps you work in focused intervals with regular breaks. Based on the Pomodoro Technique, it’s particularly effective for users with ADHD, executive function challenges, or anyone who struggles with time management.
Who benefits most: Users with ADHD, time blindness, procrastination tendencies, or those who hyperfocus and forget to take breaks.
How the Pomodoro Technique Works
- Focus session: Work for a set time (default: 25 minutes)
- Short break: Rest briefly (default: 5 minutes)
- Repeat: Complete 4 focus sessions
- Long break: Take an extended rest (default: 15 minutes)
- Cycle: Return to step 1
Why it works:
- Creates external time structure
- Makes large tasks feel manageable
- Prevents burnout from overworking
- Builds sustainable work habits
All Settings Explained
Duration Settings
| Setting | Range | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| Work duration | 5 - 60 min | 25 min | Length of a work session |
| Break duration | 1 - 30 min | 5 min | The short break after each session |
| Long break | 5 - 45 min | 15 min | The longer break after a run of sessions |
Other Settings
| Setting | Options | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| Timer position | Top Right, Top Left, Bottom Right, Bottom Left | Top Right | Which corner the timer sits in |
| Auto-start breaks | On/Off | Off | Start the break timer without you clicking |
| Sound notifications | On/Off | On | A sound when a session or break ends |
Recommendations:
| User type | Auto-start breaks |
|---|---|
| Needs a nudge to stop working | On |
| Prefers to choose the moment | Off |
That is the whole set. There is no sessions-per-cycle counter, no idle detection, no sound picker and no separate badge or widget setting: the timer is deliberately small, because a timer with a settings screen of its own is one more thing to get lost in.

Common Use Cases
Breaking Down Large Assignments
Challenge: Paper due, don’t know where to start, feels overwhelming.
Approach:
- List assignment parts (research, outline, draft, edit)
- Estimate pomodoros needed for each (1 pomodoro = 25 min)
- Start first pomodoro on smallest task
- Tick off each session on your own list as you finish it
Example:
- Research: 3 pomodoros
- Outline: 1 pomodoro
- First draft: 4 pomodoros
- Revision: 2 pomodoros
- Total: 10 pomodoros (5 hours work + breaks)
Studying for Exams
Challenge: Hours of material, hard to know how long to study.
Approach:
- Session 1-2: Review notes
- Session 3-4: Practice problems
- Long break: Step away completely
- Session 5-6: Weak areas focus
- Done: No more than 4-6 sessions per study day
Key: Use breaks to let information consolidate.
Managing Hyperfocus
Challenge: Get absorbed in one task, forget time, neglect other responsibilities.
Approach:
- Set timer before starting interesting task
- Must stop when timer ends (practice this)
- During break, check other priorities
- Decision point: Continue or switch tasks?
- Use the cycle to balance deep and broad work
Working with Time Blindness
Challenge: No internal sense of time passing.
Approach:
- Timer position: Put the timer in the corner you look at most
- Sound notifications: On
- Auto-start breaks: On
- Start of day: Plan how many pomodoros each task needs
Break Activity Recommendations
Short Break Activities (5-10 min)
| Activity | Benefit |
|---|---|
| Stand up and stretch | Physical reset |
| Get water | Hydration, movement |
| Look out window | Eye rest, natural light |
| Brief walk | Blood flow, mental reset |
| Bathroom break | Basic needs |
Avoid during short breaks:
- Social media (hard to stop)
- Starting new tasks
- Complex conversations
- Eating full meals
Long Break Activities (15-30 min)
| Activity | Benefit |
|---|---|
| Walk outside | Fresh air, perspective |
| Light snack | Energy replenishment |
| Chat with someone | Social connection |
| Light exercise | Energy boost |
| Mindfulness | Mental reset |
Tracking and Progress
The timer shows Sessions completed as a count out of 4 (for example 2 / 4). The count starts again after a long break. AssisT does not keep a history, statistics or a streak, so note your own totals if you want to track them.
- Aim for consistency: Regular pomodoro counts build habits
- Adjust timing: If you always want to extend a session, increase the work duration
Troubleshooting
Timer Notification Missed
Solutions:
- Turn Sound notifications on and raise your device volume
- Keep the timer visible: a short message also appears on the page when a session ends
- Choose a Timer position where you will notice it
Can’t Stop When Timer Ends
Solutions:
- Practice “just one more minute” → stop anyway
- Make stopping easier (save work first)
- Set up next task during break
- Remember: Respecting the timer builds the habit
Breaks Feel Too Short
Solutions:
- Increase short break duration to 7-10 min
- Are you actually resting? (Not scrolling phone)
- Try more physical break activities
- Breaks get easier with practice
Sessions Feel Too Long
Solutions:
- Shorten to 15-20 min sessions
- Build up gradually (add 5 min per week)
- Ensure task is well-defined before starting
- Consider if the task is too vague (break it down)
Keep Forgetting to Start Timer
Solutions:
- Create a “start timer” ritual
- Link to another habit (sit down → start timer)
- Put physical reminder on desk
- Press Start as soon as a break ends
